Wow, it’s day ten and I made it!
This week I have talked about a lot of great things and places here in Calgary but all of these would be nothing without the people behind them. Whether you were born here and decided to stay or you came for a visit and thought this would be a good place to call home, we have all made this city a great place to be.
Here are a few things about us that I love.
We know how to get the job done. And if something gets in our way it makes us only more determined to do the job and do it right. We have hosted royalty, welcomed the world to the Winter Olympics and are just finishing up our latest great chapter, 100 years of the Calgary Stampede.
What’s even better, we celebrate our victories and we celebrate them together. I love the ad campaign for the Stampede this year, we dress together, we ride together, we eat together, whatever it is we Calgarians do it together.
You’re not from here, that’s ok. We’ll adopt you and take care of you like our own. Take a look at what happened last month. A family who was visiting lost a beloved teddy bear with very special value to them. Complete strangers would not let the story die, even to the point of offering a reward if the teddy bear was found. This kind of tenacity helped the bear be found and reunited with the appreciative family. This is just what we do.
You know what else is great, our diversity. Some outsiders look at us and see a bunch of redneck cowboys. We know better though. We just smile and then go and do something crazy like vote in North America’s first Muslim mayor or go and get voted Cultural Capital for 2012.
There are so many more things I could talk about but I think I’ll end with this. Yes we are a big city but we have a small town feel. And that is what makes Calgary awesome!
I would like to take a moment to thank the Calgary is Awesome website and in particular Julie Van Rosendaal. We are lucky to have her in this city. She offers so much of herself to our community and I know some days she goes non-stop. She is a real gem. Julie has faithfully retweeted my blog posts every one of the last ten days and I really appreciate her support in this adventure. So for just one last time, you can find her blog post that inspired the last ten days here.
And don’t forget to check out the rest of my series on why Calgary is awesome. Better yet, why don’t you tell me why you think Calgary is awesome? You’ve read my take on it, now I want to know yours.
